Thursday evening the Bertram city council discussed details about the hiring process of a new police chief for the small town after its current chief, Tracy Weems, announced his resignation May 28. It will take effect June 30.
After 16 months with the Bertram Police Department, Weems resigned to take an investigator position with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, an agency that oversees peace officers in the state.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a step up, but it is a position I’ve been looking at pursuing for years,” Weems said Tuesday. “It’s certainly not about leaving Bertram, I like it here.” Weems will join his wife, who lives in Austin already.
“It’s been fun, a learning experience all the way around,” he said. “My goal is always to leave something better than when I found it, and I think I’ve accomplished that.” Weems mentioned the new police cars the city acquired last month.
Weems said the most challenging part of his job was updating the department with new cars and equipment as well as increasing training for officers, all on a limited, small-town budget
